Common E-File Rejection Reasons & Solutions
Identity Protection PINS – missing or incorrect
If you have been issued or requested and IP PIN, it is REQUIRED to be entered into your tax return. Each year you will receive a letter with a new number. Include this letter with your tax documents for your return. We cannot file your return without it.
If you do not have, or cannot find, this letter you will have to visit www.IDMe to procure your number or request another one.
Marketplace Healthcare 1095-A Statement – missing
If you received medical insurance coverage through the Missouri Marketplace, your health premiums are based on your income. You MUST provide form 1095-A to your preparer. We are required to report the information on this form to determine if you get a Premium Tax Credit or if you are required to pay back credits that you received throughout the year. We cannot file your return without this.
Dependents –
- Duplicated on divorced parent returns
- Duplicated on parent & working child returns
Ultimately, dependents that are claimed on multiple returns will cause a rejection on any return filed after the first one. A dependents SSN can only be claimed on one return.
When you have a dependent with earned income who will be filing a return, they MUST mark that they are a “dependent of another.” If they do not, your return (which includes their name and SSN as a dependent) will be rejected due to a return already filed using their SSN. This requires that you either remove them as a dependent from your return or have them amend their return and you will need to then paper file yours.
SSN & Name Mismatch-
- Newlywed- name change
- Adoption- name change
- Transposed SSN
- Incorrect SSN or name spelling on forms
The SSN and name that we file your reutrn under must match what the social security administration has on file. It also must match the information on your W2. If you have a W2 with incorrect information you must request a corrected one be filed. If you name in incorrect with the SSA you must request a correction.
To ensure proper entry, provide your tax preparer with a copy of your ID and SSN card.
Return already filed-
The system will reject a return if one has already been filed under that SSN. If you have already filed with another provider, you will need to return to them to file an amendment. If you have not filed a return yet, steps for identity protection should be taken. The IRS will also require additional steps for identity verification in order to file your return. Speak with your tax advisor to direct you through this process.
